Bittersweet

Bittersweet
Celastrus Scandens
Celastrus is derived from an ancient Greek name
Scandens refers to its climing habits
Folklore info:
Long ago shepards hung bittersweet vines around the necks of sheep that they believed had the evil eye.
Not sure what a sheep could do to have to be saved from the "evil eye"?
I picked this beautiful bittersweet wreath up at a local shop in Jamesville, NY. She does not have a website to share with you. The name of her shop is "The Colonial Housefitter". I love her shop and will take a few pictures to share with you next time I make a visit.

A Trip to the Apple Farm

On Saturday we took a ride to a local apple farm, Beak & Skiff, http://www.beakandskiff.com/ in Lafayette, NY. Just a hop, skip and jump from where we live.

It was a glorious day, the sun was shining and the temperature was about 70 degrees.

We enjoyed apple fritters and apple dumplings. They are the best right out of the fryer! Yum, all covered with sugar.

In tradition of our yearly trip, I bought apple cider and apple cake mix along with cheese curds. The cheese curds sound gross, but boy they are great. I am not sure if cheese curds are an Upstate New York thing.
All I know is that I don't have to go very far to enjoy a beautiful autumn day!

Autumn Beauty

"There is a harmony in autumn, and a luster in it's sky, which through the summer is not heard or seen, as if it could not be, as it had not been!"
Percy Bysshe Shelley

Wild Turkey

Here is a picture of just two of the wild turkies that we have in our backyard. I think they are so beautiful and interesting to look at. Everyday they arrive with their heads bobbing looking for something to eat. We have six to eight that hang around daily. We have a beagle that thinks he can catch them. Good Luck! I think the birds are smarter than the dog!
